What to Expect

Consultation

A chiropractors first concern is to find out what is wrong. On your first visit the chiropractor will fully discuss your complaint, gathering as much information as possible about the pain, how the complaint was brought on and about your past health history.

Examination

You will be asked for your permission to the physical examination. You may be asked to remove some clothes, a private changing area and gowns are provided. (If you are uncomfortable with this you should tell the chiropractor). The chiropractor will examine the problematic area concentrating on the musculoskeletal system. Sometimes it may be necessary to gather more information, such as requesting results from previous tests or sending you for x-rays or MRI scans.

Report of findings

Before treatment starts, the chiropractor will explain the examination findings, diagnosis and outline the course of treatment. You will be asked if you wish to proceed with treatment. You may also be told about any exercises or changes to lifestyle that may be beneficial. If Chiropractic care is not seen as appropriate the chiropractor will endeavour to refer you to the appropriate specialist whether it be Neurological, Orthopaedic, Rheumatological, or GP.

Treatment

Treatment mainly involves safe, gentle specific adjustments done by hand, often achieved by a short thrust to the joint. Chiropractors may also use ice, heat, soft tissue techniques and exercises.
